The Lindworm

Why not take a leisurely stroll through Klagenfurt after your conference in the city? You will invariably wind up at the Neue Platz square and the famous 16th century Lindwurmbrunnen (Lindworm Fountain). A mythical beast, the Lindworm is a Klagenfurt landmark and the city’s heraldic animal. It is a bi-pedal dragon-serpent hybrid with a long tail and short, stumpy wings.

Legend has it that the Lindworm was slayed by brave men who secured the area and made it safe for settlement. In Carinthia’s capital, the statue stands on a pedestal next to Hercules and now serves as a fountain.
